The Kebaya Kutubaru, originating in Central Java, has a rich history dating back to Indonesia's Dutch colonial era. Its design blends Islamic modesty and European aesthetics, making it popular among women of Javanese, Chinese, and Dutch descent. Unlike the more fitted Kebaya Encim or Kartini styles, the Kutubaru's loose tunic-like fit and vibrant patterns make it suitable for everyday wear.
Despite its decline during the Japanese occupation, it has regained prominence post-independence, symbolizing resilience. Today, Kebaya Kutubaru stands as a testament to the adaptability and enduring beauty of traditional attire.

What sets Kebaya Kutubaru apart from other kebaya styles is its structural bef, a rectangular or square fabric piece that connects the garment’s sides across the chest and abdomen. Historically, this design element mimicked the look of an unsecured kebaya layered over a kemben (torso wrap). To achieve an elegant silhouette, the kebaya is traditionally paired with a stagen (a cloth wrapped around the stomach) or a corset, enhancing the wearer’s slender appearance.
The Kebaya Kutubaru is a unique style with a relaxed, tunic-like fit, contrasted by its bold, vibrant patterns and colours, unlike the more structured styles like the kebaya Encim and kebaya Kartini. The unique bef replaces brooches or other fasteners.
